Things to do at Old Town San Diego

I have to admit that Old Town is my favorite place in San Diego. If you love history, art, food, architecture, or just taking great pictures, it’s a great small town to spend a few hours strolling around and you can easily spend 2-4 hours there. From art galleries, gift shops, and chili sauce to the Wells Fargo Museum and authentic Mexican restaurants, Old Town San Diego has my heart! There is so much charm and character to this little town. Here are my favorite things to do in Old Town:

  1. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Wells Fargo Museum; Robinson-Rose House, the home of San Diego’s first newspaper The San Diego Herald; the Black Hawk Livery & Blacksmith; the San Diego Union newspaper building; and the first public schoolhouse in San Diego, the Mason Street School. Many of the museums are free!
  2. Get authentic, delicious Mexican food at Casa Guadalajara. You will love the fabulous decorations and beautiful courtyard dining. You can also enjoy free live music with friends and family.
  3. Old Town Trolley (only $35.50): You can hop on and hop off at 10 different stops and explore Old Town San Diego at your own pace.
  4. Whaley House Museum on San Diego Avenue was constructed in 1856. It was San Diego’s very first theater and county courthouse.
  5. Get fresh taffy at Cousin’s Candy.
  6. Shop at the Old Town Market Place. You can find all kinds of crafts, souvenirs, organic products, and chili sauces here. Its open-air courtyard makes a great backdrop for some Pinterest-worthy pictures. 😉
  7. Mormon Battalion: In addition to amazing state-of-the-art video tours and interactive computers, you can pan for gold and make your own bricks. It’s a great spot for indoor family fun.
  8. If you want just a brief stop at Old Town San Diego, take the City tour with USS midway museum (only $65.98). This tour takes you to  all the main attractions in the city: Old Town San Diego, Little Italy, Balboa Park, La Jolla, and Coronado, all in one day.
